After many years in the Royal Air Force, I started my first business as a print broker in 1982. I made all the normal mistakes (and more) in the marketing of my business in my first year and asked the advice of a very successful business friend on how I could improve my business development.
The advice I received was mainly based on a few basic but very simple referral marketing ideas, which resulted in dramatically increasing my business by 200% within a just a few months and reducing my marketing spend by 95%.
I continued my development on referral marketing, especially on joint venture marketing. Results of these joint venture projects for my clients ranged from just over 100% to 490% increase in business with a huge reduction in marketing costs within short time periods.
Within 2 years I had gone from being a print broker to a full time marketing consultant specialising mostly in joint venture marketing, a business which grew very successfully over the next 17 years. I had a major wake up call when I headed a marketing agency and got my fingers badly burnt in a partnership dispute, which led to my next career move to becoming a qualified IT training manager with a leading IT company in the auto-repair industry.
